I didn’t really know what I wanted to do when I left school, so I choose something I knew I would enjoy and that would hopefully take me somewhere interesting…travel and tourism!
After completing my degree in Tourism Management and working abroad for a couple of years I decided to return full time to the UK and settle into a career here. I did several customer service and admin roles and finally ended up working in a marketing department for a lingerie and swimwear company as a Marketing Administrator. As I enjoy being creative and like doing different things I absolutely loved the variety of the work that the role threw at me, every day was a school day as I learned so much from my colleagues along the way. After 7 years I worked my way up to Marketing Coordinator and found myself attending photoshoots, PR and blogger events, coordinating our stockist training events and campaigns, writing content for the website, handling social media and much, much more! I was also able to complete a Chartered Institute of Marketing qualification whilst I was there, which really put me in good stead to progress in my Marketing career.
I then went on to work for Morphy Richards as Assistant Trade Marketing Manager, which really enabled me to focus my skill set on how to support retailers with point of sale, communication strategies and coordinating large-scale training roadshows.
I have been at Whitemeadow now for 4 years after joining as their first Marketing Manager in 2017. I work with a great bunch of people from the Sales team, and also with our Sales and Brand Development Manager. As it’s a small team you have to be prepared to do anything and everything, which from experience I have learned is a common trait within Marketing roles!
Every day is different, so I don’t really have a typical day. I am responsible for the marketing strategy at Whitemeadow, as well as organising and attending trade shows and photoshoots, managing our relationship with our marketing agency, updating our website and social media channels and designing Point of Sale for customers. I am involved in researching trends in the industry and responsible for putting together collateral such as Look Books and mood boards. I also work with a variety of departments within the business to ensure that Whitemeadow is always represented within our brand guidelines. There is usually a long list on my to do list every day, so I never get bored and the days seem to just fly by.
My advice to anyone who is considering a career in Marketing is be prepared to work hard and take every opportunity to learn something new. By getting involved at every opportunity you will learn skills along the way and learn from your mistakes. Marketing roles can often involve long hours, especially if you are attending events, but the rewards are great and seeing something you have worked so hard on come to fruition make it all worth it.
