A day in the life of Paul Smith

My job as a Health, Safety and Environmental Manager is to maintain, manage and the introduction of current and new, health & safety policies across all Whitemeadow sites, actively promoting and strengthening the existing health & safety culture within the business. In addition, I develop environmental policies in line with present legislation and customer initiatives, as well as the current and future aspirations of the business.

I currently work with our senior leadership team to implement site wide initiatives to embed behavioural safety and best practice approaches.

I have been doing my current role since February 2020, however I had been a production manager in the business since May 2016.

I enjoy all aspects of my job but most of all I really like passing on my health & safety knowledge to our employees and seeing how they take the training into their roles.

I arrive at work at 7.am and once I am in my office, I check all my emails and messages and reply to them where needed.

I will carry out inspections daily and issue the report to the site managers and the Directors with actions required to rectify non-compliances, ensuring continual health & safety Improvements within the business.

During my visits to Whitemeadow sites, I will take time to meet with anyone who stops to ask a question or share an idea. If it is important to them it is important to me.

The biggest responsibility of my role is simple: keeping employees, the company, and the surrounding community safe from safety and environmental hazards.

Every day is something different, one day I maybe auditing, carrying out inspections, or training, while other days will be incident management, reporting and improving policies.

It gives me great job satisfaction in getting people to care as much about safety as I do. By getting people to think of safety as something they want and not just something they need, it creates a happy and safe work environment for all.
